So this weekend while waiting in vain for Little Miss to arrive I finally took the time to update the ROM in my phone. When I got the phone (an HTC Mogule pic) I got the more expensive data plan for two reasons. First I needed it to qualify for the $150 rebate on the hardware. Second the plan was suppose allow the GPS on the hardware to give me driving directions. This was key to me because I wanted a phone that could let me check my email on the road and give me driving direction. That way I can leave my laptop and GPS at home and just take one device, my phone on most business trips. Well the ROM that came with the phone when I bought it could not access the GPS hardware for some bizare reason I never figured out. A few months ago HTC (the manufacture) and Sprint final release a new ROM that granted access to the GPS chip for both Sprint Telnav application and third party applications. After waiting through the first rash of bugs I finally installed the ROM this weekend. All in all it works pretty good and has open up a bunch of new uses for my phone.

Up until last night I was completely happy with my new phone (not so happy with Sprint-Nextel customer service but that's a topic for a different post). As you have no doubt notice I have posted several times to my blog from my phone. I love that I am never away from my email and can surf the web at anytime to get some useless bit of info. I use my phone as a PDA a lot at work to remind me of tasks and to schedule meeting and the like. Well last night about 10:30PM I figures I would sync my phone and ipod and go to bed. Plug the phone in no auto-sync, use the task manage to make sure all the programs have been shutdown to free up memory and still no sync. Do a soft reset (this usually fixes the problem), and damn if for some reason the phone does a hard reset and wipes the system clean. DAMN! It then took me another hour and half to sync, restoring my PIM info and find and install the few application I had installed on the phone. I am still tweaking all the sounds, ringers and preference settings to get them back to what I like and had to re establish all three of my email accounts. I am now earnestly seeking a backup program that will allow me to back up to a spare Micro-SD card so I can have a full system restore with me while on the go.
